Anna's Secret

Anna has been murdered in an Island community where trust is everything.

1860s in what’s typically a normal, quiet PEI community.

When Anna Gillis is found dead, a constable is summoned from the nearest town to solve the mystery.

Angus MacDonald, church elder and community leader, isn’t satisfied with who is accused and makes it his mission to uncover what really happened.

When unsettling acts of arson and mischief start to occur, the last of the original settlers shares a cryptic secret that might be the key to what really happened the night Anna died.

‘Anna’s Secret’ features inscrutable characters with secrets to hide against the backdrop of an Island community yearning to both help and heal.

FOR FANS OF…

Anna’s Secret , like Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear, has an atmospheric tension where personal secrets are intricately woven into the fabric of the past.

IN MARGARET’S WORDS – THE BACKSTORY

“Who is Anna? Why was she murdered? Who did this terrible deed in quiet little Lyndale? It was a real murder that was never solved in real life. An ancestor of my own was accused of it, but it wasn’t him. He left the Island soon after and never returned. The place it occurred can still be seen if you know where to look. Locally it is known as “Anne Beaton’s Hollow” or “Goblin’s Hollow.” It is said to be haunted. The character of Anne Beaton was, as my uncle put it, “no better than she should be.” But I questioned that assumption in the novel. In real life they called in the constable who couldn’t solve the case. He was followed by an army colonel who decided that it was a crime of passion committed by a woman. He left it there. This was a story begging to be told in a fictional way. I had a lot of fun writing it and solving the puzzle.”

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

“The opening sentence drew me in right away, and I found the writing style both engaging and easy to follow. There were a few well-placed twists throughout the plot that kept the mystery alive, though I was able to guess the murderer and had a strong feeling about the underlying secret early on. That said, it didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment of the story.”

“This is a quick, atmospheric read that offers a glimpse into the challenges of life in 19th-century rural Canada. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you enjoy historical mysteries set in unique locations, this is a great one to pick up.”
