Mattie’s Story is a poignant coming of age tale set in the 1840s of Prince Edward Island. Born from a family story passed down to Margaret Westlie by her grandmother, it breathes life into the pioneer experience through the eyes of a young woman finding her own path.
It was a different time.
A time when you were in a one-room schoolhouse, daydreaming with friends, helping on the farm, being a good sister and simply living as a normal 15 year old girl in rural Prince Edward Island. Yet when the man of the house suddenly passes, and within no time another gentleman is in his place, everything changes.
Including arriving home where you’re told to marry a man whose name you don’t even know. Today.
Which is what you do because during this time, that’s just the way things are.
Rich in historical detail and told with tender honesty, ‘Mattie’s Story’ is a heartfelt, coming-of-age story of young Mattie Cameron thrust into a life beyond her years. From family pressures, society expectations, motherhood, faith and hardship, to the trials of a marriage not of her choosing, Mattie must rely on her quiet inner strength and natural resilience to navigate her journey from innocence to womanhood.
Can Mattie make it through? Only time will tell.
Mattie’s Story will remind you of the hardworking Ingalls family in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series, echoing the daily triumphs and trials of 19th-century settlement.
“This story came to me from my grandmother. When I was a girl, I loved to hear stories from the old people’s childhoods in Prince Edward Island. She told me the story of her grandfather and how he came to be married. He saw his future wife in church and called on her mother to ask for her hand. Her mother said no at first: ‘Take the older one, she’s more settled.’ But no, Ewen wanted Sarah.
Sarah was outside playing with the younger children, up in a spruce tree picking gum, when her mother called her down to meet her future. This moment of pioneer history—at least according to my grandmother—became the heart of my first short story.
What followed was an act of ancestral storytelling. While napping after a writing class, Grandma’s story came alive in a reverie. I dreamed the details, the dialogue, and the descriptions of 19th-century settler life. I thought that was the end of it, but Mattie kept talking to me, insisting I write her full coming of age journey. The original story became Chapter 3, and the rest is the reimagined life of my own ancestors.”
“Mattie’s Story is a beautifully crafted coming-of-age tale that draws you into the rugged red-earth world of rural Prince Edward Island with the immediacy of fresh storytelling and the quiet grace of a classic historical novel.”
“Rich in historical detail and emotional truth, Mattie’s Story will appeal to lovers of historical fiction, character-driven narratives, and anyone who appreciates a heroine with grit and heart.”
